The application for 1200 houses on the Sharphill site at Edwalton has been rejected by the Borough Council planning officers. The application was rejected on the grounds of traffic congestion, ecology and also that it is too early in the context of the Regional Planning guidance released which suggests the majority of housing should occur in five and more years time. The Crown Estate have contacted the Government to submit plans for an Eco-Town at the site of RAF Newton near Bingham in Rushcliffe. There has been speculation that this site would replace the earlier one proposed by a developer at Kingston-on Soar since the Government rejected this site but in an unprecedented move decided to retain “a site” in Rushcliffe in the final fifteen.

The Crown Estate will now enter a period of consulatation and will set up a web site at www.newtonecotown.com during the week of 23rd June. It is important that local residents contribute to this consultation be it for or against.

If you wish to also view details on what makes an Eco-Town then visit the Governments web site at www.communities.gov.uk  there is a publication which you can either obtain free or download.

A self-contained composting toilet has been installed at the Keyworth allotments in Willowbrook. The toilet provides a clean and decent facility for both female and male allotment users and is protected by a lock with a numerical code. Waste matter is composted and deposited in the soil, without any need for connection to the drains. Grants towards the cost of approximately £6000 were made via borough councillors from the Community Support Scheme.

At its meeting on 3 June, Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Cabinet (or, rather, the 4 members who actually turned up) unanimously rejected the Off-Street Parking Review in a “debate” lasting just 4 minutes. This followed months of work by Council officers and members, several hundred pages of statistics on car park usage, several meetings by a specially convened sub-committee, and meetings with local representatives and stakeholders in communities likely to be affected by the proposals. There is only one word to describe this cop-out: Read the rest of this entry »
